Do You Need Planning Permission To Get A Solid Roof Installed?
Conservatory usage will have been a non-starter for so many people over the summer months because their extension gets incredibly hot when it’s warm, too hot. Sound familiar?
It’s a literal waste of space when you think about all of the ways you can use a conservatory in summer, or at any time, and how it’s a great place to keep the kids occupied whilst they’re off school.
We have a solution to the problem at Amber Home Improvements – a solid roof, such as the Ultraroof 380.
Switching to a solid roof will make your conservatory fit for use in any weather, keeping out extreme heat or extreme cold from the space.
It’s a simple job for us to fit a solid roof as you can often retain the current framework, and it will only normally take a few hours to make it watertight.
One thing though. It may require planning permission first.
The official advice for solid roof installations is as follows:
- If replacing a traditional glass roof or polycarbonate roof with a solid roof, you will need Building Regulatory Approval.
- Speak to your local Building Control Officer to check if the new roof satisfies the rules.
- A “change of use” occurs when you switch from a glass roof to a solid as it makes what was formerly a temporary extension, a permanent extension. In this situation, you need to apply for planning permission.
- Can you recall if you needed planning approval when the conservatory was originally built? If you did, and the solid roof is taking the place of a translucent roof, you must apply for planning permission and also make a full building regulations application.
- You may also have enjoyed Permitted Development Rights at the time of the conservatory installation. That may no longer be the case if you get a solid roof installed, which will necessitate an application for planning permission.
