Perhaps the most notable feature of Sash windows is how they open and close. Sash windows feature two panes of glass positioned in vertical grooves that slide up and down; one in front and one behind. This motion is made easy by the use of a simple but highly effective counterweight mechanism. Traditionally made from lead, counterweights found in modern windows now feature durable, energy efficient springs that enable the windows to be opened and closed incredibly easily.
